Character driven story with epic world building. The writing has a unique voice and walks the line between its sweet romance and the dark fantasy backdrop in a way that keeps the pages turning. Suneater explores themes of balance, loyalty, and personal strife and identity outside of familial expectations and societal norms. Protagonists are beautifully flawed with unique personalities that shine through actions and witty banter. Respectful as it hints at topics of mental health, grief, and feelings of inadequacy. Full of metaphors! LGBTQ readers put this one on your list because the chemistry between the protagonists is heartwarming and a good old-fashioned slow burn.

"Suneater" launches The Desert Rose Saga by Noah Bodie. Spellbinding and unforgettable, it's an extraordinary debut that secures Bodie's place as a rising voice in the dark fantasy genre.
The story follows Andreas Dwyer, a sheltered half-elf eager to step out from under the shadow of his family's legacy. Seizing an opportunity to break free, he jumps at the chance to take on a risky mission, crossing paths with Simon, an enigmatic orc, whose guarded demeanor hints at a life shaped by hardship. Together, they embark on a quest filled with peril, sacred relics, and ancient mysteries that challenge their strength, trust, and beliefs. Set against the backdrop of a world recovering from centuries of war, "Suneater" weaves a tale of resilience and redemption as Andreas and Simon uncover their intertwined destinies.
I thoroughly enjoyed this debut! One of the most notable aspects of the book is Noah Bodie's masterful world-building. Breathtaking. Lusefell feels alive with its complex landscapes—from the scorched deserts to the enchanted Spellglass architecture—it's vivid and greatly immersive. The history of the realm is shaped by mortal resilience and divine betrayals, and flows naturally into the story, grounding the narrative while keeping readers intrigued by its mysteries. The story's dark, intricate lore unfolds seamlessly, offering just enough mystery to keep readers captivated without feeling overwhelmed.
Additionally, I thought the characters stole the show. Andreas is a convincing protagonist, completely relatable as a young man caught between the expectations of his family and his own identity. Simon's rugged charm and quiet strength balances the story with humor and warmth to lighten its darker moments. Their evolving relationship is filled with trust, tension, and unspoken feeling, and hints at meaningful LGBTQIA+ representation. Andreas' twin sister, Lilliana, brings an additional dynamic, her wit and bravery complementing the larger narrative in engaging ways.
Bodie does a remarkable job of blending the fantastical with the personal to anchor the story in emotions like self-discovery, resilience, and loyalty. These elements feel organic, never forced, as they emerge naturally through the characters' choices and struggles. The shifts between gripping action and reflective character-driven moments are seamless.
When I finished the last page, I was thoroughly satisfied - but eager for more at the same time! "Suneater" is a dazzling entry into the world of dark fantasy and the beginning of what promises to be a remarkable series. Noah Bodie has created a world and characters that stay with you long after the book is closed—a must-read for fans of immersive and emotionally charged storytelling.
