Plot/Idea: Bodie skillfully combines many moving parts to form this entertaining story of magic, passion, and belonging. Investigator Cerci Rivera is desperate for answers, but she can't find those without the help of the irritating, swoon worthy Ridge Thorne, a monster hunter whose reputation precedes him. Their quest together starts out rocky, but as the story progresses, the sparks that initially cause friction burst into a steamy, action-filled romance rich with meaning.
Prose: Bodie's voice is convincing and straightforward, laying out the story's magic and setting with intensity. The story neatly ties in with past events, allowing readers to understand the motivations driving both main characters.
Originality: Fantasy tropes drive the plot, but Bodie deftly puts their own spin on them to keep them fresh and inventive.
Character/Execution: This is a narrative buoyed by a capable, strong woman who takes charge of the world around her. Bodie crafts that world with careful attention to diversity, offering a varied cast that more often than not works well together, and they seamlessly intertwine the characters' unique gifts and flaws.
